Odd hours...scary messages!

I wish people would not call me at odd hours. These being the hours between midnight and 9:00AM.

No, its not because I am unavailable. Not because it interrupts me. Not because I am in no mood to talk to anyone during these hours, or because I am sleeping.

Its because a phone ringing at odd hours scares me! Millions of thoughts run through my head about what could be wrong that they had to call me at that hour! So far, it has always turned out to be nothing, (touch wood!), but it still makes my heart skip a beat, fearing the worst!

I got 3 missed calls at 6:00AM today, I did not even hear the phone ring as I was fast asleep. Saw 3 missed calls and 3 new messages when I did get my phone out of my purse at 9:00AM. No caller-id meant it was from India. Instant panic! Listened to the messages, and turned out someone was trying to find someone who I happened to know. Was relieved to know it was nothing really, and then upset, because, WTH! Why scare me like that!? Everyone who knows me, knows that I get up only after 8:30, so how hard is it to remember that?

And how hard is it to leave coherent voice messages?
My sister called me once at 1:30 on a Friday night (which is fine, she knows I sleep late), I ran to get the phone, but it went to voicemail, and this is the message she left "Its didi, don't know what to say, just call me whenever". I was SO scared! Called my husband and asked him to sit by me, while I called her back. And she said, oh, I didn't call for any particular reason, so that's why I said "don't know what to say". She might have shortened my life by a few seconds there! How I wanted to strangle her!

Oh well...some things will never change! Hmphh!

Oh how I hate that too. Specially the folks who call up at like 4 PM in the afternoon in India because they’re too busy to care for things like time zones. And the freaks that don’t leave a message, I want to sue them to pay me $100 each time they don’t leave me a message. I’d become a millionaire, I tell ya! Some day I will get real pizzed off and blog about it, you see.

The messages I got today were "classic"!
First one...no voice. Only some sounds.
Second one..."hello...calling from Mumbai"
Third one..."...ptesh? Kashmira?"

That's how I knew who was calling and for whom!!

OMG!! I totally know what you are talking about!! I am the same way...i hate people calling at odd hours...especially when they don't even leave a message sometimes!

omg... same same!!!

I get nervous when my mum calls me in the daytime (coz we generally talk every night), and even if i m in a meeting and i disconnect, she keeps calling!!!
It scares the hell out of me!! :(

Just today morning, while i was sleeping, at 7:30 i got a call from Assam, it was like... omg wat, coz my buha and cousins live there and i generally call them... so i was like, and then my nephew's voice was there, which acted more into it.... i was sleepy, and i was horrified if everything is right!! :(

the only time i become happy is when i see some frnd or preety gal calling me at wee hours!! :D :D
heheh!!!

It pays a lot to be far away from parents and home.... always!!!

@vrij, speaking of wrong numbers...we once got someone insisting that some Marianne lived with us. We kept saying and she kept asking us, are u sure? And yet another one who kept insisting that my number (which I have had for the last 6 years) is her husband's number. And she called twice in a row early in the morning!

And don't be jealous yaar...who knows my mansion (which it certainly isn't, its quite small) might not be a "home", and i might be waking up so late because I have nothing to look forward to in the day? To me, you have an equally blessed life :) Doubly blessed now with Vidip!

@veens, now thats totally hilarious :)

@cg, isn't it scary and frustrating? Thankfully my parents never do that. In fact, even when my mom did have a heart attack, dad called me only at a decent hour, to make sure I don't wake up to shock.

@ankur, u got it dear, its hell sometimes staying SO far away from family.

@crystal, its not weird, and its not a habit. Its more of instinct. Just ask anyone who is away from their family...

I know that feeling too. And not without reason: have had bad news to delivered to me at the crack of dawn... Ever since, I've been mortally scared of early morning or middle-of-the-night calls. And curse people who call up for no reason like that!

rofl, i don't knw why, but i really found this funny!

Haha!! I guess people forget their others' lifestyles differ from their own. Also, people from India are forever miscalculating the time in the US.

Renu said...

This is so true and my whole family gets scared with any call at odd hour,so iam myself very careful about not calling my children at any odd hr, they get unnecessarily worried.About the miscalculation of time, yeah my daughter also keep saying that evrybody forgets the time and calls her in the early mornings on birthdays anniversaries, sometimes even around 3 am:(

Imagine my condition...i was so scared and i blasted him off when he called me after half and houw.

yaaa can totally understand...it is irritating only because u tend to get worried....
but think about it...an odd-hour-phonecall could be a messenger of good news too...good news which cant wait to be told until tomorrow :)

think of it that way and itll no longer bother you....

hahah
well i can completely imagine and relate...even I am wary of these calls at wierd hours....but i hate them for another reason...which is more than often they disturb my sleep!

@ekta, yeah that too...you're half asleep, and u dont even know whether it was a dream or an actual call!

@mishra, welcome :) u heard a lot abt me?! kya? anonymous calls here mostly mean its from India, so I kinda know where its from.

@manas, its just natural, isn't it?

@redemption, sure she had a right to call, and we spoke for a long time when i called her back, but yeh kya message hua?

Aneri Masi,

First visit to your space. Read some of the posts. For Diwali, since this is your first after marriage, I would suggest do up your house as per your and family's liking, light some diyas at night, firecrackers but of sparkelers type would be fine, nice spread for dinner specially some sweet dishes of Indian varieties and last but not the least do thank whichever God you believe in for all you have.

Any call at odd hours does make heart skip a beat. I do not know why people do not understand this simple thing.

Take care

The last 3 calls I received at odd hours was bad news about my mom, bro and gran.... SO I HATE the freaking ring after decent hours.
But the clan still don't understand. The least they can do is acknowledge the time difference? BAH!
