Just read the news that Madhuri Dixit received the Padma Shri award!
Ummm...why????? For her distinguished contribution in the field of art!

UPDATE: After reading some of the comments, I feel kinda okay about it. I guess it is based on "popularity" of the person. I am not a huge fan of her acting, but I do admire the way she has managed her life. She is one of the very few big stars who has not been embroiled in some scandal/controversy/affair or other, and has not compromised her principles either.

I dun like ash... but she atleast has "brand india" in a way../... but padma shree for madhuri ?? i mean..maybe i am nt aware..what she has done for the nation in general...?? she is a great heroine...but ... umm...
@samby, nef, I also didn't know the criteria, so asked Wikipedia. Apparently its for "distinguished contribution in various spheres of activity". She got it for the field of arts, a few other folks also got it.
Now, I don't really know whats so distinguishing about her acting. I would nominate versatile ones like Nandita Das.

ohhk..i read it now too... so well i take my nation point back.... she has achioeved sucess in commercial fils...has she won a natinal award or sumthin??? anyway..mabye she eserves it..but there are alot more ppl than her (and barka dutrt :-X) who deserve this... an award loses its valuse..iof its generalized in such a way.... :-)

@vrij, can you quickly fill me in on who this barkha dutt is? i googled, but all i got was that she's a journo, and a feminist. a lot of folks don't seem to like her. Kaiku? what'd she do?
@anjuli, yeah, i agree she is a good actress, but how is her contribution to the field of art any better than, say Sridevi's, or Anupam Kher's?
Maybe its the dance factor too?

Aneri.. she's one of those journos who's just become a fav of many ppl just by sweet talk and doing things that are politically correct. From a nothing to the political editor of NDTV and second in charge within say about 5-6yrs means that either she's exceptional or she's pseudo. I dont find her to be exceptional in any which way I see..

i watched Aaja nach le just coz of her... she is an amazing actress and awesome dancer :D :D

Madhuri Dixit was kinda good during her days....i love to see her dancing!But does she deserve the padmashree..not v. sure.

MD has been a decent actress, so its ok to have her some award :)

@pri, I think she was always a little on the heavy side (DTPH, HAHK, very "top heavy" in both of them.
@all-others, I am at peace with her getting the award now, as I mentioned in the update. Better her than most others!
@elusive, well, being involved ONCE is not as bad as changing bf's every 6 months like the starlets are doing these days. Even with the sanju thing, she maintained quite a dignified silence about it, and it died away.
i like her the best in hindi cinema!
